In wind farm Luchterduinen an oyster trial took place in recent months: oyster banks and reef balls have been placed on the seabed. With these 'artificial reefs' we want to gain knowledge about the development of oyster banks within wind farms. The first results show that the design of the cages needs to be adapted.

Turning point for underwater nature in North Sea wind farms
With a financial contribution of 8.5 million euros from the Nationale Postcode Lotterij's Droomfonds, Natuur & Milieu and the North Sea Foundation (Stichting De Noordzee) can for the first time strengthen underwater nature in wind farms in the North Sea on a large scale. As a result of human intervention and disease, the natural reefs there have virtually disappeared. But within the wind farms on the North Sea, fishing is not allowed over the seabed. By specifically placing living reefs here, we create habitat for shellfish to attach to. This creates nurseries that give biodiversity in the North Sea a 'kick-start'.

Oysters and artificial reefs in the water for new nature in wind farm on the North Sea
Today, Natuur & Milieu, North Sea foundation (Stichting De Noordzee), Van Oord and Eneco Luchterduinen have installed cages with flat oysters and reef balls in wind farm Luchterduinen, 23 kilometres west of IJmuiden. The Rich North Sea project investigates how nature enhancement and the generation of sustainable energy can enrich each other. This pilot is made possible in part by ASN Bank.
